ASCOM DRIVER friendly
« on: April 21, 2014, 05:53:28 PM »
I have been asked if there are any plans to make Satellite Tracker ASCOM compliant. This is currently under consideration but is a very, very low priority.

Hello

I look forward to seeing if this becomes a reality in the future. I currently use EQMOD with a HEQ5Pro, and the only effective way to use the Satellite tracker is to use a couple of separate software packages, EQMODLX (Communication for LX200 control) and HWVSP (Virtual Serial Port) Removing these two would make it much less clunky, and direct communication with the Satellite Tracker Software would be so much easier.

Thanks for your efforts.

A few thoughts to the priority of this feature:
As there are plans to port to Visual Studio this feature could come into reach easily. I feel tempted to move this issue from "nice to have" to actually needed. In our case this is definetly a "blocker" as we couldn't achieve to get the serial port running. So have no other mean to control our telescope than by ASCOM driver wich provides a TCP connection.
Without as ASCOM driver we can not use Satellite Tracker at all.
Also this would extend the usability of the software to all types of telescopes, where ASCOM drivers exist for (are there any without?) eliminating the necessity to maintain and validate special code for each supported type.

+1 on Ascom compatibility, this would open up the door for this software.

I spent a couple of hours this evening looking into ASCOM. I watched the 30 minute video on the ASCOM website and that was interesting. I see that a lot of the major telescope companies have ASCOM compatibility. I took a look at the template and it is quite involved when it comes to the use of ASCOM for telescopes. I will continue to read more on that and I may try to implement that kind of interface in the near future.
